Director, Sheldon Callahan and Producer and Co-Director, Takeshi Hiraoka are in the process of creating something rarely ever seen in independent film. This filmmaking duo has cloaked one of humankind’s core myths in the context of a martial action, sci-fi, thriller. “We are pushing our own boundaries first,� says Sheldon, writer, director and star of the film. It sounds cliché until you see the massive effort put forth for this project.
The ORIGIN film project began 3 years ago. Like most creative works, it began as a mere notion in the thoughts of its creator, Sheldon Callahan. The story began to take shape as he rode the BART, and soon evolved into this massive project, unlike anything he had ever dreamed. Callahan penned it as a short story and later developed a rough and disjointed screenplay.
Lack of experience in screenplay writing brought him to the desk of long-time friend, Joshua Paddilla who adapted the film into it a working screenplay at its current form. Takeshi Hiraoka pushed the film in to preproduction as he and Callahan assembled a team of people to create ORIGIN. Combined with the cinematic insight of Director of Photography, Pete Smith, and his talent for aesthetics, along with the expertise of Visual Effects Director, Kevin Hoppe, ORIGIN has become its own creative force.
With all of their hard work and modest beginnings, the ORIGIN team is now 90% complete with production. They are presently focusing their efforts on marketing and promotion, with the hopes of building awareness locally and internationally.
Callahan and Hiraoka are passionate about spreading the knowledge and skill set that goes into making a serious, full-scale, independent film. They are resolute to educate new, up-and-coming filmmakers and artists on how to accomplish such a project. “We want to teach everyone how to do this stuff so they can go out and make great movies themselves,� says Hiraoka. Behind-the-Scenes featurettes, as well as articles on various aspects of filmmaking are included the works to give people a realistic idea of how this film was strategically prepared, organized and executed.
